The MMORPG previously known as Worldwide Webb is officially trying to reinvent itself under a completely new identity. Now called Soulbound Online, the pixel-art sandbox MMO is preparing for a Steam release after distancing itself from its earlier blockchain and crypto roots.
The announcement initially caused some confusion because another game called Soulbound already exists on Steam. However, this upcoming title belongs to developer SpiderWare, which has now renamed the project to avoid overlap while attempting to enter a much broader audience outside the crypto gaming scene.
From Blockchain MMO to Traditional MMORPG
Before becoming Soulbound Online, the game operated under the name Worldwide Webb, one of the many blockchain-focused MMORPG projects that emerged during the NFT and crypto gaming boom.
That original version heavily promoted digital ownership, blockchain integration, and crypto-related systems. Now, however, the developers appear to be abandoning that direction almost entirely as they pivot toward a more traditional MMORPG audience.
According to reports, the older blockchain-based version of the game is shutting down in favor of this new cleaner rebrand.
Soulbound Online Is Already Playable
Even though the Steam release is still upcoming, Soulbound Online is already available as a free-to-play browser MMORPG.
The game mixes sandbox systems, social gameplay, cozy activities, and action combat inside a retro-inspired pixel-art world.
The official premise places players inside a digital universe where they become trapped while facing a mysterious hostile force threatening the game world itself.
It is a setup that feels very inspired by classic virtual-world anime and MMORPG storytelling, especially series like Sword Art Online.
Pixel Art Continues To Be One of the Biggest Highlights
One thing immediately catching attention is the game’s visual presentation.
Soulbound Online leans heavily into vibrant pixel-art aesthetics, combining detailed environments with colorful lighting effects and modern MMO interface elements.
The game’s art direction has already generated positive reactions online, especially among players who enjoy retro-inspired MMORPGs and cozy multiplayer games.
Despite the controversy surrounding its blockchain origins, many players admit the visual style itself genuinely looks impressive.
Crypto Stigma Still Follows Former Blockchain Games
The move away from crypto also highlights a growing trend inside the gaming industry.
Over the last two years, several blockchain-focused games have either shut down completely or attempted to rebrand themselves for more traditional gaming audiences after interest in NFT gaming sharply declined.
Projects tied to blockchain technology often struggled with player trust, monetization concerns, and long-term retention.
For many gamers, simply having NFT or crypto integration became a major red flag regardless of gameplay quality.
By dropping much of its crypto identity and repositioning itself as a standard MMORPG, Soulbound Online appears to be trying to escape that stigma before launching on Steam.
Steam Release Could Decide The Game’s Future
Moving onto Steam could become the project’s biggest opportunity yet.
Browser MMOs often struggle to maintain visibility, while Steam offers significantly more exposure to mainstream PC players.
At the same time, the platform’s audience is usually far more skeptical of blockchain-related games, which means the success of Soulbound Online may depend on whether players are willing to give the project a second chance under its new direction.
For now, the developers seem focused on presenting Soulbound Online as a fully standalone MMORPG experience rather than a crypto ecosystem.
